Anchored from the storm 112cm(w)x92cm(h)

I was inspired by the stories of a friend who travelled the world alone in his amazing yacht. One night and in an enormous sea and rain, he climbed the mast on his own to fix the navigation apparatus which was located at the very top of the main mast! All while his family at home knew nothing of it. While they waited for the daily contact he promised to give.

He did manage to repair the system, however he had gone off course during the night.

So in this painting, I imagined him eventually finding this safe cove hidden just around a point. I imagined him then able to anchor, eat, rest and sleep. And also able to count his blessings. 

This is my interpretation of his yacht finding a safe harbour to rest while another huge storm is brewing yet again. You can see the heavy deep dark blue storm swirling and coming through the trees.

I wanted to give him a homely feeling and so painted gumtrees; a true Australian native.

It depicts a man who needed adventure and that adrenaline rush. Of a kind and gentle man who can now say ‘I did it, I am now home in my safest harbour, I am anchored from the storm!

And maybe it’s all not so far from all our hearts - we as humans, look for adventure and challenges. And we all like to know we have an anchor that’s safe while we watch the storms pass.

This work has a freedom of expression which I enjoyed immensely. It is full of mossy rocks, gorgeous colours and movement. 

Mixed media on canvas - wash, acrylic, charcoal and inks. Primarily three colours plus white.
