From being lost in a paddock when working up, to being in a tinny lost in a natural lake when it’s full - the fence line is the thing you follow to find your way back. There’s no panic, there’s no stress because it all makes sense. So everything around you is bright and colourful, deep and meaningful. What a wonderful world we live in.
(working up is a Australian farming term for ploughing a paddock to get it ready to be sown. When doing this, dust can be still in the air at night and so at times whilst driving the tractor you can lose your way)
(Lake Cowal is New South Wales largest natural inland lake. And as a child I spent many hours there with my father fishing in the ‘Clark cutter’, his little boat, better known as a tinny! Because this lake only filled when it rained, it was rich farming land when it was empty. And so there were fence lines; well to be accurate, the tops of posts could be ‘sometimes’ seen protruding out of the water. To move from ‘paddock to paddock’ my dad would carefully find the open gates. And sometimes we would be lost and need to follow the fence to find our way home).
